FLORIDA STATE PARKS – More than 18.2 million people visited Florida's award-winning state parks last fiscal year - setting an all-time statewide attendance record. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo ranked at the top of the list with more than a million visitors. Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin, St. Andrews State Park in Panama City, Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine and Homosassa Springs State Park were the most popular parks in their region.

“Where else in the state, or the nation, can you and your family hike, bike, swim, picnic or bird watch for an entire day for less than the price of a single movie ticket?” said Secretary David B. Struhs. "Florida's state parks are an unbeatable value. They protect our environment, entertain and inform visitors, and contribute over half a billion dollars to the economy every year."

CROSS FLORIDA GREENWAY– Imagine a fuel made from homegrown vegetables, vegetable oil, fats and grease. The Department of Environmental Protection is turning this revolutionary concept into a reality. The Office of Greenways & Trails is pumping a new “green” fuel called biodiesel, made from these ingredients, into its fleet of field trucks.

John Alden is noted for the fact that he was a cooper by trade and was asked to join the Mayflower company for the extremely important task of caring for the Pilgrims' beer  kegs while on their New World journey.

1-14-04 Australian news services claim they have information through unknown sources the rival outlaw motorcycle clubs have called an emergency meeting for today in a bid to stop an imminent Adelaide biker war.

Interstate members of the Hells Angels and at least two other clubs are said to have been summoned to Adelaide for today's expected meeting to discuss ways to "fix" growing tensions that has been blamed for a recent outbreak of violence on city streets.

It is believed a factional split within the Hells Angels' ranks is central to current problems.

Members of the Finks, Rebels and Bandidos are said to be meeting senior Hells Angels at an undisclosed location. Reportedly the discussions will focus on breaking up a chapter of the Hells Angels that has been blamed for the increasing violent outbursts between rival clubs.

In the past two months, there have been several brawls and confrontations between rival clubs in and around city nightclubs.

In all, the Navajo population in the U.S. is about 250,000, the largest tribe in the nation. The Navajo Reservation, including Monument Valley, covers 17.5 million acres in Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Navajos prefer to call themselves Dine (Di-NEH, or "the people").

Sacramento, CA. - (MCNW) Assemblyman John Longville of California says an amendment to force some motorcyclists to be organ donors is unacceptable to him, and he will have it withdrawn.
Longville had introduced AB1200 to allow adults 18 and older to legally ride motorcycles without wearing helmets. California currently has a mandatory helmet law.
Longville later asked legislative consultants to come up with some amendments to make the bill more palatable to other lawmakers. The consultants came up with an amendment that states anyone who chose not to wear a helmet under the proposed law "is deemed to have consented to the making of an anatomical gift under this act."
Longville told the AMA that this language "is not acceptable to me, nor should it be to anyone else. As soon as I learned of this language, I asked that it be removed from my bill."

FLFLHTC: Damn does he really think that we are going to believe this explanation or was he suddenly hit with the realization that motorcyclists have a lot of political clout due to organizations such as the AMA, ABATE and other MRO'S across the country.

The following is from kevinnash.net:
On December 31, 2003 my contract with WWE officially ended. I met with Vince and we talked about the possibility of my staying with the company in a creative role. This would have meant working 5 days a week and spending too much time away from my home and family so I decided not to stay with the company.

Lesbian and gay rights activists are planning civil rights rallies during "Freedom to Marry Week," Feb. 9-15, to increase support for same-sex marriage. The groups want to stop aproposed anti-gay amendment to the U.S. Constitution that they say will not only ban marriage by same-sex couples, it could also wipe out a host of local, pro-gay civil rights protections around the country. "We're not taking this threat lying down. Activists in cities across the nation are stepping forward to organize civil rights rallies," says activist Robin Tyler, a co-founder of DontAmend.com. More than 20 cities are organizing civil rights rallies and other events, and national organizers expect that number to double by Valentine's Day, Feb. 14.

From AGNews
This week we received the sad news of the death of a Floridian serving his country in Afghanistan. Dr. Roy Alvin Wood was a medic in a Florida Army National Guard special forces unit. He was the first soldier from Florida to lose his life in Afghanistan.

Roy Wood was a special man. An emergency room physician at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers, he was a 24-year veteran of the Army Reserves and the National Guard, achieving the rank of major. He felt a strong desire to serve and help others, so he volunteered to go
overseas.

It was not that simple. There were no openings for medical personnel of officer rank. Undaunted, Roy took a 50 percent military pay cut and joined the unit by taking the only opening available in the medical field - that of a medic at the enlisted rank of sergeant. There can be no greater illustration of commitment.

Roy's unit was conducting operations against al-Qaeda and remnants of the deposed Taliban regime, when he was involved in a fatal vehicle accident. As we are sometimes tragically reminded, military service carries all kinds of risks too numerous to count.

What makes this even more tragic, and personal, are those he leaves behind: his wife of nine years, Hana, and their two children, six- year-old son Roy and three-year-old daughter Caroline. They were lucky enough to spend one final Christmas with their husband and father, who was home for a week in December before duty required that he return to Afghanistan on December 30.

Something that particularly caught my attention about the quality of this man was a comment offered to the Naples Daily News by his best friend: "He hated injustice," said Brightman Logan. Roy Wood was overseas protecting Americans from terror attacks and fighting those whose societies embrace injustice. He is truly a hero in every sense of the word.

At a reduction in gene pool variability rate of 7.5% per generation, how long will it take a town that has been bypassed by the interstate to breed a Country-western singer?

Word of the Day
nosocomial \nah-suh-KOH-mee-ul\ adjective

: acquired or occurring in a hospital
Example sentence:
The appendectomy itself went well, but the patient contracted a nosocomial infection afterward and wound up staying in the hospital longer than anticipated.
Did you know?
"Nosocomial" is a word that usually occurs in formal medical contexts; specifically, in reference to hospital-acquired sickness. We hope you never encounter "nosocomial" as part of your own medical diagnosis, but if you do, you might want to remember that the term descends from "nosocomium," the Late Latin word for "hospital." "Nosocomium" in turn traces to the Greek "nosos," meaning "disease." That root has given English other words as well, including "zoonosis" ("a disease communicable from animals to humans under natural conditions") and "nosology" ("a classification or list of diseases" or "a branch of medical science that deals with classification of diseases").
