This
came to me today (1-19-07) from my ZDNet newsletter.
"Storm Worm," one of the larger Trojan horse attacks in recent years, is baiting people with timely information about a deadly, real-life storm front, security researchers said Friday.
Over an eight-hour period Thursday, malicious e-mails were sent across the globe to hundreds of thousands of people, said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer for F-Secure.
People who open the attachment then unknowingly become part of a botnet. A botnet serves as an army of commandeered computers, which are later used by attackers without their owners' knowledge.
Storm Worm carries the subject line "230 dead as storm batters Europe," Hypponen said, noting the unusual twist to the e-mail.
"The e-mail was started 15 hours ago, when the storm was peaking in Central Europe," Hypponen said. "This is unusual in that it was very timely."
Storm Worm is a Trojan horse with an executable file as an attachment. Cybercriminals took advantage of social engineering, using the news of the European storm to get people to open the attached malicious file, which promises more news on the weather emergency. The recipient must open the file for it to execute.
The file creates a back door to a computer that can be exploited later to steal data or to use the computer to post spam.
Storm Worm is already close to being as large as the bigger attacks of 2006, Hypponen said, though it's still smaller than Sasser and Slammer.
Hypponen also noted that this Trojan horse is unusual because most attacks these days tend to be smaller and targeted, as criminals seek to pilfer personal information for financial gain, rather than fame.
Though Storm Worm is widespread, the damage may ultimately be minimal in the U.S. because most tech security companies will have already added it to their blocking list before people get into work, he added.
Other e-mail subject lines for it include "U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza..." and "A killer at 11, he's free at 21 and..."
According to the Associated Press, the European storm has killed at least 41 people.

The future of light is plastic, Cyberlux says.
The company, which specializes in light-emitting diodes, plans to reveal in about four months prototypes of a new style of white-light LEDs that would both cost substantially less to manufacture and provide more light than conventional LEDs.
Combined, the two advantages would enable light fixtures based on LEDs, which are now relatively expensive, to better compete with traditional lamps based on conventional glass bulbs and fluorescent lights, according to Cyberlux President Mark Schmidt.

The Old Pueblo, as Tucson is affectionately known, is built upon a deep Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and Old West foundation. Arizona's second-largest city is both a bustling center of business and a relaxed university and resort town. Metropolitan Tucson has more than 850,000 residents, including thousands of snowbirds who flee colder climes to enjoy the warm sun that shines on the city more than 340 days a year.
The name Tucson came from the Native American word stjukshon (pronounced stook-shahn), meaning "spring at the foot of a black mountain." (The springs at the foot of Sentinel Peak, made of black volcanic rock, are now dry.) The name became Tucson (originally pronounced tuk-son) by the Spanish explorers who built a wall around the city in 1776 to keep Native Americans from reclaiming it. At the time, this presidio (fortified city), called San Augustin del Tuguison, was the northernmost Spanish settlement in the area, and current-day Main Avenue is a quiet reminder of the former Camino Real ("royal road") that stretched from this tiny walled fort all the way to Mexico City.
Heavy-duty chemicals aren't the only way to get rid of household odors. Lemons, herbs, vanilla, baking soda, newspaper and even cat litter can be used to take out unpleasant smells..

Never pay retail prices unless absolutely necessary.
Use coupons, send for rebates, and shop the sales.
If you buy in bulk when items are on sale, you will always have on hand the things you need. You will not have to make special trips to purchase items at full price. Don't be caught by surprise - plan ahead.
You will feel more secure knowing that you have a full pantry as well.

A couple from Carolina and a couple from the Pennsylvania were seated side by side on an airplane.
The girl from Carolina, being friendly and all, said, "So, where ya'll from?"
The Pennsylvanian girl said, "From a place where they know better than to use a preposition at the end of a sentence."
The girl from Carolina sat quietly for a few moments and then replied: "So, where ya'll from, bitch?" |
BAW Championship Wrestling is here for the long haul
Published: January 18, 2007
By ALLEN MOODY Of the News-Register
Terry Bull doesn't like you. And he hopes you feel the same way about him. In fact, he and BAW Championship Wrestling are banking on it.
The 20-year veteran of the wrestling world, known as the Tennessee Brat, Bull is one of the heels (bad guys) in BAW and he wouldn't have it any other way.
"Everywhere I go I hate the people and hate the town," he said. "I believe McMinnville is the armpit of the world."
BAW (Backed Against the Wall) Championship Wrestling is the latest professional wrestling organization to make regular ventures into McMinnville in recent months and the organization is here for the long run, having just signed a one-year agreement to use the McMinnville Armory on a monthly basis.
The company choose McMinnville in order to not create any bad feelings with other promotions that currently run in places such as Portland and Salem.
"We didn't want to step on any toes," said the owner of BAW, who goes simply by the moniker of The Suit. "Frank Wallace was a huge help in getting the Armory agreement signed, sealed and delivered."
