Edition 1-22-04

Thank you to all my faithful readers.  I started this site on 10-15-001 and on 1-20-04 hit the 10,000 hits mark.  Not to bad for a personal site that doesn't really fall into any of the search engines predetermined categories. Sort of like the owner, difficult to categorize. Sometimes nice guy-sometimes flaming asshole. Sometimes scattered always eclectic and the site reflects that. The site would not exist without the interest you shown over the years. I thank you and hope for your continued readership.

WHY IS IT THAT WE HAVE TO SPEAK ENGLISH?

An officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve was attending a conference that included admirals from both the U.S. Navy and the French Navy. At a cocktail reception, he found himself in a small group that included personnel from both navies. The French admiral started complaining that whereas Europeans learned many languages, Americans learned only English.

He then asked: "Why is it that we have to speak English in these conferences rather than you speak French?"

Without hesitating, the American admiral replied: "Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you would not have to speak German."

The group became silent.

It was a violent war between biker gangs, and everyone had to take sides. Paolo Gervasi made the wrong choice.

His allegiance with the Rock Machine, arch rivals of the Hells Angels, and the ensuing rift it caused within Montreal's ruling Mafia families cost him his son Salvatore - and ultimately, his own life.

A gunman killed Paolo Gervasi, 62, on Monday as he sat behind the wheel of his Jeep Grand Cherokee in a St. Léonard parking lot.

Gervasi met his end about6 p.m., outside a bakery on Jean Talon St. E. The hail of gunfire tore through the driver's side window and door of his vehicle.

Like his son's death, police described Monday's slaying as a professional hit, a gangland killing with little evidence left behind.

Police have no suspects.

Tell Tale Signs You Have Nothing To Do At Work...
- You've read the entire Dilbert page-a-day calendar for 2004
- You discover that staring at your cubicle wall long enough produces images of Elvis.
- You've definitively figured out a way to get Gilligan OFF the island.
- You decide to see how many Surges you can drink before the inevitable explosion occurs. . .
- People come into your office frequently... to borrow pencils from your ceiling. .

Although most people think that Napoleon was short, he was actually five feet, six inches tall (1.676 meters), an average height for a Frenchman in those days.

The Good Life
I had been called to examine a ten-year-old blue heeler named Belker. The dog's owners - Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane - were all very attached to Belker and they were  hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia  procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements,  Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They  felt Shane could learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane  seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept  Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after  Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than  human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why. " Startled, we all turned to him.  What came out of his mouth next stunned me - I'd never heard a more comforting  explanation. He said,
"Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life- like loving  everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."
