Jerklaw gets off easy.

FLANDREAU, S.D., Jan 22 (Reuters) - Former South Dakota Rep. Bill Janklow, convicted of speeding through a stop sign and killing a motorcyclist, was sentenced on Thursday to 100 days in jail, avoiding a potentially lengthy prison term.

The 64-year-old Republican, was convicted on Dec. 8, 2003, of all charges related to the Aug. 16 crash near the town where he grew up: second-degree manslaughter, reckless driving, speeding and failure to stop at a stop sign.

State law provided no minimum sentence, but Janklow could have been punished to a maximum of 10 years in prison and fines of $11,400.

A long-time friend of President George W. Bush, Janklow resigned from South Dakota's lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, effective earlier this week.

Judge Rodney Steele of the Moody County Circuit Court ruled Janklow should serve the first 30 days of his 100-day sentence in jail then begin a daytime work release program, which Steele said he hoped the former governor would use to teach.

Steele also fined Janklow $5,700 and ordered him to pay court costs. Following his jail term, Janklow will be on probation for three years, during which he will not be allowed to drive.

FLFLHTC: Justice was definitely not served in this case. This son of a bitch deserves to be in jail for the maximum not a slap on the wrist of just over 3 months in jail.  He killed Randy Scott, due to his reckless disregard for the law. 'Kill a biker go to jail' does not mean for 3 months.  It should have been for life. I hope this son of a bitch finds a loving cellmate wherever he is sentenced to serve. The family of Randy Scott has filed suit for damages.  Hopefully the findings of that court will be more in line with fucking reality. Yes, as you can see the Big Guy is fired up about this one.

Members of opposing motorcycle groups brawled in a downtown alley Saturday afternoon, resulting in three minor injuries, according to police and eyewitness accounts.

While details were sketchy, the melee involved members of the OutDwellers Motorcycle Club and the Vietnam Veterans and Legacy Veterans motorcycle clubs in the alley between Center and David Streets about 3:30 p.m.

According to Pat Sweeney, the owner of the Wonder Bar and the Parkway Plaza Hotel, a group of about 20 OutDwellers had planned to come to the Wonder Bar on a "poker run," where the group goes to five locations and gets a playing card at each stop.

The Vietnam Vets and Legacy Vets are having their annual fundraiser and raffle at the hotel, and Sweeney expected between 800 and 1,000 people to attend, including about 400 veterans.

Sweeney said the confrontation between the two groups apparently started in the bar and then quickly moved outside. A member of the OutDwellers apparently sprayed the Vets with mace, Sweeney said, though police spokesman Glen Gilmore could not confirm that Saturday night. There was an empty can of mace in the alley dumpster.

Eyewitnesses said Casper Police, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Casper Fire Department and at least one ambulance were on the scene almost immediately and blocked off access to the alley and an adjoining parking lot.

Downtown businessman Jim Wolford walked from his shop on Second Street to the alley and said "there were cops coming from every direction."

Wolford also reported "a lot of those guys coming around the back of the building with bloody noses and bloody knuckles" and police carrying shotguns. Police did not say how many people were arrested.

About an hour after the fight there were several spots marked by dried blood in the alley.

Sweeney said he cleared the bar of anybody wearing "colors" and he also put his security staff at the hotel on alert for the OutDwellers.

"We knew that the OutDwellers had booked this at the Wonder Bar, but we didn't anticipate ... the bad feelings there were between the Vietnam vets and the OutDwellers," Sweeney said. He added he had never had any problems with the Vietnam vets.

The leader of the OutDwellers, John Bert Eldredge, had no comment when called at his home. The Vietnam Vets also had no comment.

Word of the Day
lachrymose \LAK-ruh-mohss\ adjective

1 : given to tears or weeping : tearful
*2 : tending to cause tears : mournful
Example sentence:
The advertisements for the film portrayed it as a comedy, but the ending turned out to be surprisingly lachrymose.
Did you know?
The adjective "lachrymose" comes from Latin "lacrimosus" (from the noun "lacrima," meaning "tear"). "Lachrymose" didn't appear in English until around 1727, but another closely related adjective can be traced all the way back to the 15th century. This earlier cousin, "lachrymal" (sometimes spelled "lacrimal," particularly in its scientific applications) is based in the realm of science rather than emotion. It is defined as "of, relating to, or being glands that produce tears" or "of, relating to, or marked by tears." On the other hand, "lachrymose" is associated with the strong feelings that often cause those tears to flow, or something that produces those feelings.
