Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming:

"We Lakota have a close relationship to the buffalo. He is our brother. You can't understand about nature, about the feeling we have toward it, unless you understand how close we were to the buffalo. That animal was almost like a part of ourselves, part of our souls." Lame Deer, Lakota

01/26/07 Sarasota national cemetery fast-tracked
The national veterans' cemetery planned for a portion of the Hawkins Ranch south of Clark Road and four miles east of Interstate 75 has been fast-tracked, meaning a portion of its first phase could be available for burials by the end of 2008.

A large design-engineering firm, Miller Legg, with offices in six Florida cities, has been selected for the design work, which is under way. The initial construction phase will include two structures, a Visitors Information Center/maintenance facility, and the initial committal service shelter, used for burial services.

The VA's National Cemetery Administration "moved up the development schedule because there are so many veterans in that area, especially veterans of World War II and Korea, and we wanted it to be available as soon as possible for the families of those who served," said Fred Neun, acting chief of construction management for the cemetery administration.

National cemeteries -- Sarasota would be the 124th -- are available to all U.S. military veterans whose discharge was not dishonorable.

The Veterans Administration reports that there are the remains of more than 3 million veterans from every war and conflict "from the Revolutionary War to the Global War on Terror," buried in national cemeteries in 39 states.

There are more than 400,000 veterans living within 75 miles of Sarasota; 175,000 is the threshold of eligibility.
Currently, the nearest national cemetery with space available is in Bushnell, which is about 110 miles north in Sumter County.

The Hawkins Ranch site was chosen in May, and bought by the VA for about $7 million, although final transfer documents had not been signed Tuesday. Construction is set to begin in early 2008.

Congress allocated $41 million to purchase six new national cemetery sites last year. Several of the locations are expected to cost less than the Sarasota County site, and may even be carved out of military bases already owned by the federal government, said Bill Jayne, the cemetery administration's former director of contract management.

"The important thing is that we got the money," Jayne said. "It's very exciting that we'll have the ability to meet the needs of an aging veteran population. We recognize that these cemeteries become national shrines, so it's not just of matter of buying a level field for burials."

And what is now being called the "Sarasota Area National Cemetery" will ultimately be named by Secretary of Veterans Affairs R. James Nicholson.

Sarasota County was selected in 2002 as a potential site for development in 2016 because of its high population of veterans, but quickly moved up the list when Bay Pines National Cemetery northwest of St. Petersburg reached capacity and could no longer accept the remains of veterans whose families requested casket funerals.
TALLAHASSEE - Attorney General Bill McCollum today (1-25-07)issued a consumer alert following the recent theft of data involving customers’ information from numerous Florida stores. Consumers who may have used credit cards at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, AJ Wright or HomeGoods stores between May 2003 and December 2006 should closely monitor their financial statements and credit reports, McCollum cautioned.

TJX Companies, Inc., the parent company of TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and A.J. Wright stores, recently reported that its computer systems were hacked late last year and customer data had been stolen.
Company officials said the hackers broke into a system that manages credit and debit card transactions as well as checks and merchandise returns for customers throughout the United States and possibly elsewhere. It is not yet known how much or what kind of information may have been taken. Florida has 55 T.J. Maxx stores, 60 Marshalls stores, 22 HomeGoods stores and two A.J. Wright stores.

Subject: Retirement Fun!
Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day I went down town and into a shop. I was only there for about 5 minutes and when I came out there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. I said to him, "Come on, man, how about giving a retired person a break"?

He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a "Nazi", He glared at me and wrote another ticket for having worn tires.
So I called him a "doughnut eating Gestapo."

He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.

Then he wrote a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him the more tickets he wrote.

Personally, I didn't care. I came downtown on the bus and the car that he was putting the tickets on had a bumper sticker that said "Hillary in '08".

I try to have a little fun each day now that I'm retired. It's important to my health.

Removing ink stains:
Ball point pen stains can be removed by using hair spray
- let the hair spray dry and wash the item. Table salt will absorb ink when it is spilled - pour salt on the wet ink and continue to add salt until there is no more "wet ink". Then vacuum or wash. Other types of ink can be removed using rubbing alcohol.

'Monster Garage' host James to pay fine

January 27, 2007 LONG BEACH, CA -- "Monster Garage" reality show host Jesse James has agreed to pay $271,250 for violating California's air quality laws by selling motorcycles that did not meet the state's strict emissions standards, authorities said.

His Long Beach motorcycle building shop, West Coast Choppers, sold more than 50 new or custom-built motorcycles between 1998 and 2005 that were not certified by the Air Resources Board, the agency said in a statement Friday.

Attempts to reach James for comment Friday were unsuccessful. An employee who answered the phone at West Coast Choppers said the company would have no comment.

As part of a settlement, the shop is building motorcycles that comply with emission standards, the board said.

James is married to actress Sandra Bullock. His Discovery Channel series about customized vehicles aired for five seasons.

US Marshals Nab Wanted Member of Pagans
01/27/2007
NASHVILLE, Tenn.- A Virginia man wanted by Delaware State Police for racketeering has been arrested by United States Marshals in Nashville, Tenn.

The US Marshal's Service says 51-year-old Roy Palumbo, of Bealeton, Va, a known member of the Pagans motorcycle gang, is being held as a fugitive in Davidson County, Tenn., on charges of racketeering. Palumbo has been wanted since Nov. 20, 2006.

Police have been searching for Palumbo in Delaware as well as Virginia. Palumbo was supposed to appear in court in Fairfax County, Va., last week, but failed to show up for his court proceeding, Marshals say.

Marshals say an investigation revealed Palumbo fled to the Nashville area. This information was forwarded to the marshals in Tennessee. The investigation revealed Palumbo was staying at the Red Roof Inn Nashville Airport. At approximately 5 p.m. Thursday, Marshals arrested Palumbo in his room without incident.

Palumbo is being held pending extradition to Delaware.
