Congress OKs Gun Industry Lawsuit Shield
- Washington Post. com Congress gave the gun lobby its top legislative priority Thursday, passing a bill protecting the firearms industry from massive crime-victim lawsuits. President Bush said he will sign it.

"Our laws should punish criminals who use guns to commit crimes, not law-abiding manufacturers of lawful products," Bush said in a statement.

The House voted 283-144 to send the bill to the president after supporters, led by the National Rifle Association, proclaimed it vital to protect the industry from being bankrupted by huge jury awards.

Florida - Minutes into the first day of Biketoberfest, three people riding motorcycles lay crumpled and dead early this morning on a darkened road in rural southwest Volusia County.

One wiped out after hitting a dog wandering State Road 415 just north of Deltona. The other two -- one of whom was a passenger on that bike -- had rushed to help the fallen biker when two cars barreled into the group, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

A fourth person was critically injured and a fifth was treated and released.

The horrific chain of events took less than a minute, troopers said early today as they examined the scene by flashlight.

"Welcome to Biketoberfest," an FHP officer at the crash site said grimly.

Law enforcement officials say they dread tourist-heavy events such as Biketoberfest, which will bring an estimated 100,000 visitors roaring into Daytona Beach this weekend, because tragedies on the road are common.
Last year, three bikers died in Volusia in the days leading up to Biketoberfest, and seven were killed during the longer Bike Week this spring.

But even by those standards, this latest accident was especially horrendous.

The chaos began just before midnight Wednesday when a Honda motorcycle heading south on the two-lane road slammed into a shaggy black dog that troopers said had no collar.

A Harley-Davidson believed to be traveling with the Honda bike skidded down the asphalt on its side, and another biker and his female passenger stopped to provide first aid and direct traffic.

The situation turned deadly when two Honda Civics that were following each other from Daytona Beach to Deltona unwittingly plowed into the earlier wreck, killing the 44-year-old Honda motorcycle driver, his 36-year-old wife who had been riding with him and the 47-year-old female passenger from the motorcycle that stopped to help. The driver of the Harley-Davidson was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The names of the victims were not available this morning, and the names of the two people driving the Civics could not be confirmed.

FHP troopers think the 25-year-old male driver of the first Civic, who had minor injuries, was distracted by the person directing traffic. The 24-year-old female driver of the second Civic was not injured when her car rear-ended her boyfriend's vehicle. It was not clear whether her car struck anyone else.

Traveling through the heart of Volusia's rural interior, S.R. 415 connects northern Seminole County and the Daytona Beach area. It's an especially popular route during biker events, offering an alternative to Interstate 4.
The road is lit only by moonlight and is lined with a few, far-from-the-road homes, as well as heavy brush and trees.

Troopers say many cars and motorcycles far exceed the 55 mph speed limit, but the two Civics were not speeding.

"I've been doing this 32 years and it's worse every year," FHP Cpl. Dwight Wiles said this morning while trying to piece together details of the accidents. "I've worked many a homicide on this road."

Standing amid the carnage on S.R. 415 early this morning, FHP Cpl. Mark Kuczynski warned that motorists who stop to help out at an accident need to be aware they are putting themselves in a dangerous situation, especially if they are in the roadway. Don't do it, he pleaded.
FLFLHTC:My sympathies go the friends and families of those involved in this tragedy.  The trooper states the male driver was distracted by the person directing traffic and his girlfriend drove into him. Is this an attempt to place the blame on a pedestrian? There are many distractions while driving. It is still the ultimate responsibility of the driver to operate in a safe manner for the conditions. The girlfriend is also responsible for the accident she had. Proper following distance and rate of speed would seem to have prevented her involvement the way this report reads.

The trooper pleads for motorists not to be in the roadway due to the dangers involved.

I am alive today thanks to caring motorists who blocked traffic and physically prevented the driver involved in my accident from moving her car. At the time my motorcycle and myself just happened to wedged underneath it. This was done by normal everyday people who saw a need and took action. These are people who had no known connection to the motorcycle community. Unfortunately I have no clear of thanking the individuals who came to my aid.

The motorcycle community has a long well know history of coming to the aid of those in need. This is why every charity known to man seems to approach us when they need help with fundraising projects etc. It would seem that the trooper involved does not fully recognize that true bikers will stop to render what assistance they can in any situation. To think anything different is truly misguided. Does this mean that to do so is sometimes a dangerous thing to do? Most certainly.  Does it mean that we need to properly assess the situation and respond in the best way possible to reduce the possibility of further damage that may result from the actions we take? Of course. Does this mean that we will stop from rendering aid to those in need?

Not on my watch!
Damn proud to be a biker

'Big Willem' remanded in Hells Angels case
20 October 2005 AMSTERDAM — Disgraced bikers' leader 'Big Willem' van B. was remanded in custody for two weeks on Thursday as 32 Hells Angels appeared in court as part of major crime investigation.

Van B., who was expelled in disgrace from the Hells Angels last year, will have to spend seven days in isolation.
This means he will not be allowed any contact with the outside world or have visits from family and friends.

A court has already turned down an application from his lawyer Marcel van Gessel that police interviews with 'Big Willem' be videotaped. The lawyer said his client fears the police will intimidate him into making statements against his former comrades.

Police arrested 45 Hells Angels in early morning raids across the Netherlands on Monday as part of an investigation into series crimes including murder, intimidation, gun running and drug dealing.

Of those arrested, 32 were brought before the remand hearing on Thursday to extend their period of detention while the investigation continues.

'Big Willem' is suspected of involvement in a range of crimes, including murder or manslaughter and assault.

Van Gessel was presented on Thursday with a portion of the prosecution file assembled by the authorities against his client. The evidence was contained in a box and three large files.

"A large dossier," Van Gessel remarked. "There has been a lot of investigating". But he said he was not impressed because a lot of the material was old.

The Dutch National Detective Service detained up to a quarter of all Dutch Hells Angels in a series of coordinated raids on Monday morning.

Detectives, backed up by firearms units, carried out raids on Hells Angels clubhouses and homes in several Dutch cities.

Police seized a grenade launcher with ammunition, a flame-thrower, two hand grenades, a smoke grenade, a percussion cap, a submachine gun and 19 other guns. They also discovered EUR 70,000, six bunch of cannabis plants, and several expensive watches.

About 1,000 officers were involved and 64 locations were searched in the planned operation. Television footage of one of the raids showed officers with automatic weapons standing guard as a bulldozer knocked a hole in a fence around the Hells Angels property.

'Big Willem' was expelled from the Hells Angels last year because he had allegedly been offered EUR 1 million by property tycoon Willem Endstra to murder convicted Heineken kidnapper Willem Holleeder.

It was suggested that 'Big Willem' was to kill 'Angel friend' Holleeder by bombing the Angel's clubhouse in Amsterdam. No attack was carried out on Holleeder but Endstra was shot dead in Amsterdam in May 2004.

From Wrestling News Today
Stephanie McMahon hasn't been back on TV for long, but she already has a new shirt up on WWE Shopzone for female WWE fans. It says "the bitch" on the front and "is back" on the back of the shirt. The description reads about how Stephanie is back with a vengeance, how she's ruthless, etc... The release of the shirt and the description definitely makes it seem like WWE has plans to have Stephanie remain an on-air character for a while.

WORD of the DAY

telegraphese \tel-uh-graf-EEZ\ noun

: language characterized by the terseness and ellipses that are common in telegrams

Example sentence:
The translator couldn't keep up with the speaker, so what we heard of the speech sounded like telegraphese.

Did you know?
E-mail's the thing nowadays, but in the 19th century the way to send a quick message to someone far away was, of course, the telegraph. The original French namers of the telegraph ("télégraphe" in French) took a lesson from the Greeks: Greek "tēle-" means "distant," and "-graphe" traces to a Greek verb meaning "to write." Later, a message sent by telegraph was dubbed in English a "telegram" (from Greek "gramma," meaning "letter"). Telegrams were a great innovation, but they were expensive. You had to pay by the word, so folks created a kind of shorthand that let them keep their missives brief. By the late 1800s, "telegraphese" was being used for any language that was as terse as the clipped and cryptic style used in telegrams.
