.A stock broker, on his way home from work in New York City, came to a dead halt in traffic and thought to himself, "Wow, this seems much worse than usual." He notices a police officer walking between the lines of stopped cars, so he rolls down his window and asks, "Officer, what's the hold up?"

The officer replies, "Hillary Clinton is depressed, and she stopped her motorcade and is threatening to douse herself in gasoline and set herself on fire.
She says her husband is running around on her more than ever and the Democrats told her to forget about running for President in 2004. So we're taking up a collection for her."

The stock broker asks, "How much have you got so far?"

The officer replies, "About 4 1/2 gallons, but a lot of folks are still siphoning.

At the height of the gale, the harbormaster radioed a coastguard on the spot and asked him to estimate the wind speed. He replied he was sorry, but he didn't have a gauge. However, if it was any help, the wind had just blown his Land Rover off the cliff.

Irish police are being handicapped in a search for a stolen van, because they cannot issue a description. It's a Special Branch vehicle and they don't want the public to know what it looks like.

A funeral was scheduled for Saturday for one of two members of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club from Michigan who were killed when they were run over along with four others in Florida.

Donald Dunham, 61, of Brethren, was recalled by friends including Howard Neitzke as having a great personality.

"He will be sadly missed by all who knew him," Neitzke told the News Advocate of Manistee. "Donny was real people, meaning there was nothing fake about him. He was a very honest man, telling it like it was."

Originally from Bay City, Dunham owned a house and property in Brethren, where he visited on a regular basis to hunt, fish and ride motorcycles with friends.

Dunham and his girlfriend, Nola Zietler, 47, of Bay City, were killed Oct. 29 in Panama City Beach. Police have filed murder charges against Timothy Pilgreen, the driver of a stolen pickup truck who chased and plowed into the bikers after an argument

Pilgreen 26, of Texarkana, Ark., has been charged with two counts of open murder, four counts of attempted murder and other felonies stemming from a chase and scuffle with a state environmental officer. The officer's gun discharged during the struggle but no one was hurt, police said.

Pilgreen admitted he hit the bikers on purpose during a jailhouse interview with The News Herald of Panama City, apologized and said he would ask for the death penalty because he fears retribution from the Outlaws.

Word of the Day
placate \PLAY-kayt\ verb

: to soothe or mollify especially by concessions : appease
Example sentence:
In an effort to placate the angry customer, the store manager replaced the defective product with a more expensive model at no extra charge.
Did you know?
The earliest documented uses of "placate" in English date from the late 17th century. The word is derived from the Latin "placatus," the past participle of "placare," and even after more than 300 years in English, it still carries the basic meaning of its Latin ancestor: "to soothe" or "to appease." Other "placare" descendants in English are "implacable" (meaning "not easily soothed or satisfied") and "placation" ("the act of soothing or appeasing"). Even "please" itself, derived from the Latin "placēre" ("to please"), is a distant relative of "placate."
