TOLEDO, OH (AP) -- The jailed leader of the Outlaws motorcycle club is set to face his second trial in less than a year on charges that he ran a highly organized drug operation that used murder to intimidate rival gangs and expand its network.

Fourteen members of the Outlaws are to go on trial in U.S. District Court on racketeering charges. Jury selection begins Wednesday.

They are accused of selling and distributing cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamines and LSD throughout the Midwest during the 1990s and up until their arrests last April.

Fancy that. Taxpayers in Virginia might have to cough up bucks because a former South Dakota congressman killed somebody.

In a curious bit of legalese, a U.S. attorney has determined that Bill Janklow was “on duty” when his car sped through a stop sign and clobbered a motorcyclist last summer. Randy Scott died, and his relatives wanted to sue in state court, where they could seek punitive damages.

The U.S. attorney’s decision means federal taxpayers would be on the hook for any civil damages — not Janklow himself.

It’s hard to justify the ruling. We’ve heard that police officers are always considered on the job. But how does that extend to a congressman who’s merely rushing home — and barrels through a stop sign at between 64 and 71 mph? What congressional duty was he fulfilling?

HUDSON - Ashley Schuering was on her bike, headed to her cousin's house to babysit. She was waiting to cross Sea Ranch Drive when a man suddenly came up behind her and grabbed her left arm above the elbow. He dragged the 15-year-old toward his car.

"You have nice legs," he said. "I have a boat anchored at the beach."

Ashley froze, not sure what to do besides scream. And then, just five feet from the man's car, she remembered what her dad had told her.

Fight.

If "somebody comes up to you," he always said, "fight - go down fighting. Don't give up at all." He preached that lesson again when he made her watch the video of Carlie Brucia being led away in Sarasota without struggle by a man authorities say later killed the 11-year-old.

With her father's words in her head Monday afternoon, Ashley jerked free. She turned to the attacker and pushed him in the chest with all her might. The man, who Ashley said seemed drunk, stumbled and nearly fell. Ashley ran to her bike. "I pedaled as fast as I could."

Harold H. Carroll, 56, was arrested on a charge of attempted kidnapping and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Before Circuit Judge William Webb on Tuesday afternoon, Carroll, speaking in a thick Southern drawl, said he was not guilty. Webb told him that it was not an arraignment and a plea would have to come later.

Webb set bail at $500,000 on the attempted kidnapping charge.

Ashley was taken to the scene Monday evening and identified Carroll as the man who tried to abduct her, the Sheriff's Office said.

The 2nd Avenue Deli in New York City rolled back prices to 1954 levels for one day and while it was a hit with customers, the servers weren't happy. "Terrible, just terrible," Linda Li tells the New York Post, after collecting a $1 tip that normally would have been 10 times as much. Thousands of customers lined up for 50-cent pastrami and brisket sandwiches.
An order of two soups, two chopped liver appetizers, a brisket sandwich, a pastrami sandwich, desserts and drinks, totaled $5.25 -- a savings of $80.

Nationwide, from 1990 to 2001, a total of 18,887 homes were built to local green building guidelines -- but in 2002 alone 13,224 green homes were built. Green homes usually take advantage of passive solar heating and are well insulated. Bamboo often is used on bathroom and kitchen floors instead of hardwoods, because it grows at up to 30 inches a day, the Christian Science Monitor reports. Sensors turn bathroom faucets on and off and dual-flush toilets save more than 2,200 gallons of water annually. In a survey by the University of Florida, nearly 90 percent of people asked said they would pay more for green home features if they recouped their expenses -- such as through lower utility bills -- within five years.

Word of the Day

orgulous \OR-gyuh-luss\ adjective

: proud
Example sentence:
Antoine usually worked with the boutique's most elite clientele and tended to adopt an orgulous air toward more "ordinary" customers.
Did you know?
"From Isles of Greece / The princes orgulous, their high blood chafed, / Have . . . sent their ships . . . / To ransack Troy. . . ." Thus Shakespeare began the story of the haughty princes and their revenge for the abduction of Helen in Troilus and Cressida, employing a colorful word first adopted in the 13th century from Anglo-French "orguillus." After the Bard's day, "orgulous" dropped from sight for 200 years; there is no record of its use until it was rejuvenated by the pens of Robert Southey and Sir Walter Scott in the early 1800s. Twentieth-century novelists and journalists (including James Joyce and Virginia Woolf) continued its renaissance, and today "orgulous" is an elegant choice for proud writers everywhere.
