MONTREAL -- Police arrested 50 people Wednesday after breaking up a luxury-car theft ring that operated in Quebec and Ontario with alleged links to the Hells Angels biker gang. Dozens of officers swooped down on 30 municipalities across Quebec and in the Ottawa area to break up the ring, which had $1.2 million in stolen vehicles, such as Mercedes-Benz, BMWs and SUVs, police said. The new cars were stolen from car dealerships at night and resold. The vehicles had their serial numbers changed and came with fake documents, said Quebec provincial police spokeswoman Chantal Mackels. Some of the cars were sold in Canada while others went for sale in Europe. Mackels said the Hells Angels have various illegal operations to bring in money. "When we talk about criminal gangs like the Hells Angels, these people are very structured,'' she said. ``We know they work in all kinds of business activities including vehicle theft, drugs and prostitution." Among the arrest warrants was one for Paul Porter, 41, who allegedly has ties to the Hells Angels biker gang in Ontario and is the alleged leader of the stolen car ring, police said.
