Parents in New York City are paying up to $1,500 for last- minute tutoring to help their third graders pass standardized tests in late April. The city's new policy requires third graders be held back if the child does
not pass the reading and math tests, the New York Daily News reports. Parents aren't certain the last minute tutoring will help but they want to do everything they can. "This isn't stuff you can cram in," says Robert Blumenthal, who owns Blumenthal Tutoring, whose business rose by 25 percent since the social promotion crackdown. "It's not like college, where you can pull an all- nighter."

MILWAUKEE
(AP)--Five motorcycle owners have filed a lawsuit against
Harley-Davidson Inc. (HDI), claiming they were fraudulently induced
to buy or lease defective bikes.
The lawsuit, filed by attorney Ted. M. Warshafsky Monday
in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, seeks to overcome a Wisconsin
Supreme Court ruling last month that dismissed an earlier claim that
the company knew or should have known motorcycle cams made in 1999
and early 2000 were defective.
The court ruled 5-1 that the claim was too uncertain and
speculative to sue for damages.
In the new lawsuit, the owners said the company failed
to disclose the defect and fraudulently sold or leased the
motorcycles. They also claim Harley-Davidson breached its warranties
and profited from selling the defective motorcycles.
A message left late Monday for Harley-Davidson by The
Associated Press was not returned.
The plaintiffs are seeking class-action status, claiming
owners of motorcycles with the defective engines risk sudden
breakdowns and a loss of value.
Harley sent letters to customers informing them in early
2001 that the rear cam in a small number of motorcycles had failed.
The company extended its warranty for the part and separately
developed a $495 kit for dealers and service departments to repair
the original cams.

Stephane "T-Bone" Trudel, a reputed Hells Angels hitman with operations in Ottawa, is being hunted after police named him in a global auto-theft ring.
The Citizen has learned Mr. Trudel left Ottawa on Dec. 5 after taking a transfer to a Montreal chapter of the crime corporation.
Mr. Trudel, 39, was originally transferred from Quebec Hells Angels to Ottawa in January 2001 to ensure the new chapter's membership did not fall below the six-man minimum.
In 1994, Mr. Trudel was sentenced to five years in prison for attempted murder after a man was gunned down in a Montreal parking lot. The target identified him before slipping into a coma.
In December 2000, Mr. Trudel quit Rock Machine to become a prospect for the Quebec Nomads -- the same gang that once included him on a hit list. That defection was led by Hells Angels boss Paul 'Sasquatch' Porter.
In biker and police circles, Mr. Trudel is known as a violent criminal. He once worked for Salvatore Cazz-etta, a founding member of Rock Machine.
