Nicaragua, where the cost of living is a fraction of what it is in the United States, is becoming retirement haven for U.S.
retirees. The Christian Science Monitor reports an estimated
5,000 to 10,000 Americans live in Nicaragua, the second-poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, after Haiti. Many U.S.
retirees are opting to spend old age in the developing world to have a better economic situation despite the cultural and language barriers. There are more than 400,000 Social Security beneficiaries living abroad, according to the Social Security Administration.
FLFLHTC: You want to live in some foreign country, fine but your benefits stay here. Enough said.

William Eno is considered to be the "Father of Traffic Safety." He supposedly originated stop signs, one-way streets, taxi stands, pedestrian safety islands and traffic rotaries.
What is not known is that he never learned to drive and he considered cars to be a passing fad.

Beer coolers may become a thing of the past thanks to an invention that creates cold beer in three minutes. Sky News reports the invention uses a heat-absorbing gel that draws warmth from the can when the bottom is twisted and a seal is broken. "We are talking to several major breweries and expect to launch soon," says Barney Guarino, president of Tempra Technology, a Bradenton, Fla., company that has developed both self-heating and self-cooling technology for the food and beverage industries. "The only drawback is that the cans may be more expensive but Tempra's market research shows consumers won't mind paying premium prices for this."

SARASOTA -- Steven Kansler, the stepfather of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia, was in jail today on a charge that he grabbed his wife's throat and pushed her, according to a sheriff's arrest report.

Kansler, 36, was scheduled to appear before a judge this afternoon on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence. He was arrested late Monday night after deputies said an argument between Kansler and his wife -- Susan Schorpen, Carlie's mother -- became violent at the family's home on McIntosh Road.

A Sarasota County sheriff’s report said Kansler had been out drinking Monday night and when he came home, Schorpen locked him out of the house. Kansler was able get into the house, and became increasingly angry with his wife as they continued to argue, the report said.

The fight, at the home where a memorial stood for Carlie for weeks, is not the first for the couple to end with one of them being arrested. In 1999, Schorpen was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge after a fight with her husband; she pleaded no contest and was placed on probation.
FLFLHTC: May Carlie rest in a peace that she did not find here on earth.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A federal judge has declined to issue an injunction to block the firing of three state prison guards accused of lying about their association with the Outlaws Motorcycle Club.

In an oral ruling Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Mark Kravitz denied the application for a preliminary injunction brought by the correction officers against the state Department of Correction, saying that associating with the Outlaws is a matter of private, not public, concern.

Officers Gary Piscottano, James Kight and Randy Sabettini are to be fired Thursday for being "less than truthful" during a departmental investigation into their association with the club.

Officers Mark Vincenzo and Walter Scappini were formally counseled for their "unprofessional conduct." They had attended parties sponsored by the bikers.

The guards' lawyer, Kathleen Eldergill, has filed suit in federal court in Hartford alleging that the firings and discipline violate the guards' constitutional rights to freedom of speech and association, and equal protection under the law.

WWE seems to have ventured back into the realms of taste- less programming with their latest angle between Eddie Guerrero and Bradshaw. WWE creative are attempting to build heat on Bradshaw; in what looks to be a last minute effort to hype the Judgment Day main event. They are trying to do this by claiming that Eddie's mother was struck down with a "heart attack" at the hands of JLB

Eight guests at a Laughlin hotel-casino have filed lawsuits claiming employees failed to protect them during a deadly riot between rival biker gangs.

Employees with Harrah's Laughlin hotel-casino knew the Hells Angels and Mongols biker gangs were going to clash during the 2002 Laughlin River Run, but did not protect guests nor care for them following the melee, according to lawsuits filed on behalf of the eight guests.

Members of the Mongols, who were staying at Harrah's, were walking around the casino visibly armed with guns, knives and pipe wrenches, lawyer Brent Bryson said.

"Harrah's had knowledge that this event was going to happen, and they did nothing to curtail it, prevent it, or to warn nonaffiliated bikers about it," Bryson said. "They did nothing. They looked the other way and the money rolled in."

A Harrah's representative on Tuesday declined comment on the lawsuits, which seek damages in excess of $10,000
FLFLHTC; Seem to this biker that eight opportunistic money grabbers are looking for a free ride.

Energy bars and energy gels aren't the same. You use energy gels during or just after a run, workout, or race to replenish glycogen (carbohydrate stores) in your muscles. Energy bars are meant to be a healthy equivalent to candy bars: handy to carry with you yet dense in calories, high in carbohydrates, and lower in fats than candy bars. They're ideal for cyclists and hikers who need a convenient food that's going to give them many calories, thus eliminating the need to eat much else
For runners, though, energy bars don't make much sense. Because you don't eat while you run (with the exception of energy gels on certain runs), you would eat an energy bar at other times of the day, when you can just as easily eat a banana, whole-grain bagel, homemade healthy cookie, carrots, or something similar. Energy bars aren't as healthy as other foods, and they're certainly more expensive Marathon Training For Dummies, by Tere Stouffer Drenth, can get you up and running in no time!
FLFLHTC: Better yet, eat what you want, when you want it.  Enjoy your food. The big guy says screw all this high-tech stuff. Pizza, pepsi and beer for me.

Word of the Day

baroque \buh-ROAK\ adjective

1 : relating to a style of artistic expression prevalent especially in the 17th century that is noted for its use of complex forms, bold ornamentation, and contrasting elements to evoke tension
*2 : characterized by grotesqueness, extravagance, complexity, or flamboyance
Example sentence:
Marcia's taste was for straightforward, contemporary design, so naturally she was not impressed by the baroque decor in the bed-and-breakfast.
Did you know?
"Baroque" came to English from a French word meaning "irregularly shaped." At first, the word in French was used mostly to refer to pearls. Eventually, it came to describe an extravagant style of art characterized by curving lines, gilt, and gold. This type of art, which dated from about 1550 to 1750, was sometimes considered to be excessively decorated and overly complicated. It makes sense, therefore, that the meaning of the word "baroque" has broadened to include anything that seems too ornate or elaborate. Labeling something "baroque" is usually uncomplimentary now, despite the fact that it was certainly a legitimate art form in its time.
