MIDNIGHT SUN FESTIVAL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
June 21, 2005 Fairbanks, AK http://www.downtownfairbanks.com/
Events.htm 907-443-6624 June 21st is the Midnight Sun Festival in Fairbanks, Alaska, a celebration of the longest day of the year. The midnight sun.
Daylight for around 21 hours. What's it to Fairbanks? Plenty. But it all depends on whom you talk to.
For visitors, it is the fascination of having broad daylight at 2am. For the sports-fans it is the Midnight Sun Run, the Midnight Sun Golf Tournament or the famous Alaska Goldpanners midnight baseball game. But for many it is the Midnight Sun Festival on the streets of downtown Fairbanks. Come join these good folks for a celebration of the summer solstice, when Fairbanks experiences the midnight sun and more than 22 hours of direct sunlight.
Place damp paper towels in your microwave and turn it on high for 10 seconds. This makes your microwave easy to clean.
Federal helmet-law blackmail
A federal lawmaker wants all states to impose mandatory helmet laws or risk losing federal money for their highway and trail projects.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey plans to introduce the proposal as early as today as an amendment to a federal highway bill that authorizes funds for highways, safety programs, transit programs, and other purposes. Under Lautenberg's proposal, states without mandatory helmet laws would lose 1.5 percent of their overall federal transportation dollars.
The AMA is urging Congress to reject this amendment. While the AMA encourages helmet use by all motorcyclists, the Association believes that Congress should leave it up to the states to decide whether to enact mandatory helmet laws.
Let your federal lawmakers know that you oppose the Lautenberg amendment. An easy way to do this is by sending a message through the AMA Rapid Response Centerr.
IDF Purchases Harley-Davidson Motorcycles Tuesday, May 10, 2005 / 1 Iyar 5765 (IsraelNN.com) The IDF is going to equip military police with Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 motorcycles, having purchased sixty of the units.
The first six motorcycles have arrived in Israel and the military plans to gradually phase out the Honda motorcycles currently in use, during the coming two years.
Officials point out that while the cost of each motorcycle is approximately $10,000, the actual outlay to the military is significantly less since the deal in part is included in a United States aid package to Israel.
STURGIS RALLY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
August 8-14, 2005 Sturgis, SD http://www.sturgishd.com/index.html 605-347-6570 In a land where bison once thundered across the prairie, modern-day cowboys rumble across the land on iron horses. Each August, hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists journey to the Mecca of the motorcycling world: Sturgis, South Dakota.

The legacy of the Sturgis Rally began in 1938 when J.C. "Pappy"
Hoel, a local motorcycle shop owner, and some friends came up with the idea of holding a motorcycle race and stunt competition. The first event consisted of 19 racers at the half-mile track and some dangerous events such as board-wall crashes, ramp jumps and head-on collisions with cars.

Now, some 61 years later, it's the granddaddy of all motorcycle rallies and races. The small community of Sturgis has welcomed motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world for racing, tours of the beautiful Black Hills, concerts, trade shows and bike shows. It’s a week of fun and laughter and spending time with people who are as passionate about motorcycles as you are.

Not long ago a reader wrote to ask if he should clean the bore of his handgun when switching between lead and jacketed bullets. As usual with firearms there is no single, pat, answer. It depends on which way you’re going and has a lot to do with the ammo you use. I can think of no negatives if you start shooting lead bullets in a barrel previously used only with jackets. There aren’t very many pistol cartridges that leave significant amounts of metal fouling in the bore, so unless the bore is badly fouled, there’s no need to clean it before shooting lead bullets.

However, switching from lead to jacketed can produce anything ranging from nothing — to disastrously high pressures. The reason is if there is a buildup of lead in the bore it effectively increases the force needed to drive the bullet through the barrel, and pressures must increase. As long as there is absolutely no leading in the bore it will be fine to switch, but even if there is only a little it really should be cleaned first.

One of the great pieces of misinformation widely circulated is that the best way to de-lead a bore is to shoot a couple of jacketed bullets through it. Doubtless this advice was generated by someone who did it without incident and assumed it was safe. Maybe it is sometimes, but the flaw there is we don’t know where the cutoff might be.

There's more from Charles E. Petty in the March/April issue...

Molly Holly has turned down all post-WWE media interview requests, and denied that she left due to the Diva Search competition. She has gone on record saying that only she and Vince McMahon know the real reason she decided to quit, and now she is keeping it that way.
