TALLAHASSEE – Under the leadership of Governor Charlie Crist, the 2007-2008 budget includes more than $33 million to expand and improve local parks across the state. Funded through the Department’s (DEP) Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP), 197 projects in 54 counties will receive funding to develop parks and enhance local communities by increasing outdoor recreation opportunities and improving public access to Florida’s natural resources.
“Setting aside recreational green spaces within Florida’s local communities is imperative to land conservation and essential to creating strong communities,” said DEP Secretary Michael W. Sole. “Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program grants are an investment in the future of Florida’s natural resources and in the state’s citizens.” Projects include:
City of Monticello, Pear Street Park -- $200,000 Upon renovation, this small urban park will meet the needs of a growing city. Elements of the Pear Street Park project include a playground, picnic facilities, exercise area, walking path, gazebo and restroom. The park connects to a well-used paved trail that leads to the county’s larger recreation complex as well as a city park located in another underserved area.
City of Lakeland, Common Ground Inclusion Playground -- $200,000 This is an urban neighborhood park of 17.7 acres located in densely-populated south Lakeland. It is adjacent to a city-owned and operated golf course, and has been developed over the decades for a variety of recreational activities. The project will renovate the playground as well as add picnic shelters, a soccer field and restrooms.
City of Fort Pierce, Moore’s Creek Linear Park -- $200,000 During the 2004/2005 Florida Recreation Development Assistant Program submission period, the City of Fort Pierce received $200,000 to acquire an additional .55 acres for this park. The project now consists of 30 parcels along a natural creek. This year’s funding will help construct a linear park with an observation platform, walking path/fitness trail, bike path and picnic areas that will tie into the already existing 10th Street Park, where funds will be used to renovate the existing picnic areas, tot lot, basketball courts and restrooms.
Liberty County, Estiffanulga Boat Ramp Park -- $200,000 Planned enhancements for Estiffanulga Boat Ramp Park include a playground, bike trail, picnic facilities, exercise trail, volleyball court, horseshoe pit, restroom, fencing and parking lot renovation. The property has an existing boat ramp with a parking area and open field. In addition, the current park provides public access to the Apalachicola River, and will provide more recreational activities for area children.
City of Gainesville, Possum Creek Park -- $200,000 This is a 75-acre parcel of both cleared and forested areas within an urban area, just a mile from two state parks as well as another local park. The future playground, picnic facilities, skate park, trail/trail head, dog park and restrooms will provide both passive and active recreational opportunities.
City of Hollywood, Rotary Park -- $200,000 Rotary Park is a 15.3-acre park located in the center of Hollywood in an urban setting. The site hosts numerous tournaments, league games, summer sports camps and year-round sports clinics; each playing an integral part of family recreation within the community. The project will renovate all of the existing fields and facilities while also adding additional recreational opportunities including a new hiking trail and picnic facility.
“Creating and enhancing local park systems help produce active, healthy lifestyles and strong families in Florida’s communities,” said Florida Park Service Director Mike Bullock. “The Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program grants not only protect natural areas but attract people to recreate in Florida.” Administered by DEP, the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP) is a competitive grant program providing funds to local communities for public outdoor recreation. Over the last nine years, Florida has invested more than $200 million to improve local park facilities through this grant program, funding more than
1,500 projects statewide.
For a complete list of funded projects and information about applying for a FRDAP grant, visit http://www.dep.state.fl.us/parks/OIRS/default.htm.

Cops Pull Over At Least 40 Outlaw Bikers On Hwy. 401 Friday July 13, 2007 CityNews.ca Staff They were apparently stopped for traffic violations. But the drivers Peel Police pulled over on the westbound 401 near Winston Churchill Blvd. Friday afternoon weren't your average motorists. Cops hauled over at least 40 members of the Outlaws motorcycle gang, allegedly over their behaviour on the road.
There's no word on charges, but the sight of so many big men wearing their colours on so many big bikes was enough to bring traffic across the highway to a severe slowdown. Gawkers stopped to check out the spectacle, leading to a back-up that stretched all the way to Dixie Road.
The bikers were among the thousands of hog riders on their way to the Ontario town of Port Dover. It's become a tradition for motorcyclists of all stripes to head to the city on Friday the 13th, with cops in the burg standing guard for any trouble. It's part of a ritual that started with a bike shop in the city in 1981.Since then, it's become something of a pilgrimage that just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
Some got an early start. John, of the Southern Cruisers - a recreational motorcycle group, not an outlaw gang - reached Teston Road and Highway 400 at 3:45am. Why is he heading there? "You have to," he shrugs. "It's Friday the 13th ... There'll be about 60,000 or 80,000 bikers there today. With nice weather, maybe even more." He intends to "walk around" and enjoy the sights, along with everyone else.
And with more than 100,000 making the trip on Friday
13th last year, cops are hoping that's all these unscheduled tourists do.

Law enforcement bikers set to roar into town Posted: July 12, 2007 Come Sunday, a different spin on the term biker gang will descend on Milwaukee.
The Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club Inc. will roar into town for its international convention through Thursday at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center, according to Ted Engelbart, director of the Blue Knights Metro Milwaukee chapter.
The club, a non-profit fraternal group of active and retired law enforcement men and women, promotes motorcycling and emphasizes family involvement.
While appearances may be deceiving, Engelbart promises that members are all "99 percenters"- riders who are law abiding, unlike the "one percenter" outlaws.
"You'll see when some of these people come in, some of them will look like outlaws," Engelbart said. "People may say, 'Ooh, look at those scary bikers,' when these people are law enforcement. Little do they know that if they needed any help at all, these riders would be there to help them."
Named for their traditional blue uniforms and gallant behavior, the group is expecting 1,400 members to attend the convention, Engelbart said. Since its creation in 1974, the group has grown to nearly 20,000 members in 24 countries. The club has 14 chapters in Wisconsin.
Attendees will participate in a variety of social activities, including tours of the Harley-Davidson plant, brewery tours, and rides through Grafton, Cedarburg and Racine and to Lambeau Field.

To relieve the stinging from a mild burn or sunburn mix a paste of water and Baking Soda and apply to the area.
You can also add baking soda to a cool bath and that will soothe the sunburn too.
To prevent a chrome trailer hitch from getting scratched or pitted. Slit a tennis ball and put it over the trailer hitch as a protective cover.
If you have problem opening jars, try using latex dish- washing gloves. They give a non-slip grip that makes opening jars easy.

Paradise nudist resort is sold A homeowner at the Lutz property is reported to be the buyer.
By ERIN SULLIVAN Published July 14, 2007
LUTZ - A Pasco nudist resort will be changing owners soon.
Joe Lettelleir owns Paradise Lakes Resort, a 72-acre, clothing-optional haven with about 400 residents in Lutz.
A woman who answered the phone at the resort Friday, who did not want to be quoted, said Lettelleir is selling the resort to a man named John Forier, who owns a home at Paradise and also lives in Martinique.
According to a story posted on the USA Nudist Web site, Lettelleir made the announcement June 30 at the Paradise Lakes Condominium Association general meeting.
The Paradise worker reached Friday said the final papers have not been signed, but the sale is expected to be completed in the next week.
She said Forier has plans for changes at the resort, but she said Forier would be the best to explain his vision for Paradise. Forier was not able to be reached Friday.
The Pasco Property Appraiser's Office lists the 15-acre Paradise Lakes resort with a current taxable value of $1.1-million.
Other area nudist resorts include Caliente Resort & Spa, the Oasis, Lake Como Family Nudist Resort, Gulf Coast Nudist Resort and the Island Group.

Kid use of mind medicines rising
SAN FRANCISCO,--Research reveals a surge in the use of anti- psychotics and other mind-altering medicines in children and adolescents. The pharmacy benefits manager Medco Health
Solutions' forecast through 2007 describes the psychiatric drug class -- topped by medicines for
attention-deficit/hyperact ivity disorder -- as "the most powerful driver of spending growth" for children under 20. Another study, of pharmacy claims for 83,039 minors under 18, found their use of
atypical, or second-generation, anti-psychotics leaped 138.4 percent and of atypical antidepressants 42.8 percent between
1997 and 2000. Overall, 62.3 percent of children and
adoles cents seeking mental-health services were prescribed psycho- active pills for their troubles. At the same time, the aver- age price of the medicines went up by 17.6 percent, to $7.90 per order, the investigators said. Producing less severe side effects than their predecessors, atypical
anti-psycho tics -- including clozapine (brand name
Clozaril), risperi done (Risperdal) and olanzapine (Zyprexa) -- have made
dram atic inroads into children's treatment plans since their introduction in the 1990s. In seven years, anti-psychotic prescribing for children 2 to 18 rose nearly five-fold, from
8.6 per 1,000 youngsters in 1995 to 39.4 per 1,000 by 2002, a review of healthcare service records showed.
