Bob Holly has recently been complaining about the new WWE dress code that was imposed. In a meeting attended by Vince McMahon, Holly commented on the dress code saying, "that the wrestlers have to work long hours when traveling and the 'business style' clothing isn't comforable on flights."
Vince McMahon was not very sympathetic towards Holly's points.

Hells Angels promise low-key S.F. convention.

Hells Angels bikers from around the world will descend on San Francisco this week for a huge party and national convention, with police keeping a watchful eye over a group that has been associated with drugs, guns and violence.

The bikers say that far from hell-raising, they just want to sightsee at Fisherman's Wharf with their wives and kids. And local police, who are planning talks with the event organizer, say they don't anticipate any problems.

But a former federal agent with experience with motorcycle gangs says cops should be wary of visiting Canadian Hells Angels and the potential for flare-ups with a rival Bay Area biker group.

The last known violent incident involving a Hells Angel national convention occurred about five years ago, authorities say. But the Hells Angels said Friday that their bad reputation is undeserved and that hard-riding members are just excited to be coming to "Frisco" with their families for the convention, which will also mark the 50th anniversary of the San Francisco club.

Media Access Issue In Carlie Case

By MIKE SAEWITZ
Sarasota Herald-Tribune

SARASOTA COUNTY His photo has been shown countless times on the television news, and the details of the heinous crime are known to most people in town.

Does that mean Joseph P. Smith, the man accused of abducting and killing 11-year-old Carlie Brucia, can't get a fair trail?

The question is at the heart of legal arguments over the media's access to information about the case.

Over the next few weeks, Circuit Judge Andrew Owens will decide whether to release investigative records that detail evidence against Smith.

``The key is to have a fair trial,'' said public defender Elliott Metcalfe. ``If you don't have that, you've got chaos. In a serious murder case where there's a lot of publicity, it becomes a different ballgame.''

Some judges have sealed records, and others found it useless in the wake of overwhelming publicity. Some have searched for a compromise.

In Smith's case, critical pieces of evidence and witness testimony have been released to the public.

Prosecutor Debra Johnes Riva said Smith's family and friends identified him in a surveillance video that authorities say showed the abduction. Riva also said lab tests linked him to the crime.

Public defender Metcalfe said it's ``almost beyond imagination'' that Smith could get a fair trial here.

Smith's attorney, assistant public defender Adam Tebrugge, has filed motions for a gag order and dismissal of a grand jury indictment he says was biased. He hired a team of legal psychology college students to survey residents and show that publicity was overwhelming.

David Bralow, assistant general counsel for the Tribune Co., which owns the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, said defense attorneys are overreacting.

``So many people, especially defense attorneys, have the sense that any publicity is bad publicity,'' he said. ``They think they're entitled to a jury pool that is wholly ignorant to the case at large. That's just simply wrong.''
FLFLHTC: Of course this gentleman can get a fair trial locally! Just let me be the fucking judge jury and executioner (Oh I digress).  I guess I won't be called to serve on this jury!

MIAMI, July 27 - Almost all the electronic records from the first widespread use of touch-screen voting in Miami-Dade County have been lost, stoking concerns that the machines are unreliable as the presidential election draws near.

The records disappeared after two computer system crashes last year, county elections officials said, leaving no audit trail for the 2002 gubernatorial primary. A citizens group uncovered the loss this month after requesting all audit data from that election.

A county official said a new backup system would prevent electronic voting data from being lost in the future. But members of the citizens group, the Miami-Dade Election Reform Coalition, said the malfunction underscored the vulnerability of electronic voting records and wiped out data that might have shed light on what problems, if any, still existed with touch-screen machines here. The group supplied the results of its request to The New York Times.

Woman sentenced after receiving Janklow pardon
Associated Press SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A Sioux Falls woman who received one of former Gov. Bill Janklow's secret pardons has been sentenced to six months in jail on a forgery charge.

Judge Gene Kean handed down the sentence on Tuesday after a jury found Shelley Papka, 42, guilty.

Papka was accused of trying to write a fake check at a casino.

"She wrote out a $100 check to the Full House Casino, passed it acting as if she were the wife of the account holder," said Jim Iosty, Minnehaha County deputy state's attorney.

Some of the pardons secretly issued by Janklow were unsealed earlier this year after the state Supreme Court ruled governors do not have the unlimited right to seal them.

Papka was pardoned by Janklow on a robbery charge and three drunken driving charges.

Kean told Papka he considered her past pardon in the sentence.

"It's a shame you're in court today ... you blew it," the judge said.

Iosty said Papka apparently did not appreciate the significance of the pardon.

"Perhaps she hadn't had that period of pure rehabilitation before the pardon was granted, maybe the pardon was granted too easily in her case," he said.

Word of the Day

mendacious \men-DAY-shus\ adjective

: given to or characterized by deception or falsehood or divergence from absolute truth
Example sentence:
"Mildred had ... given her an elaborate but mendacious account of the circumstances which had brought her to the pass she was in." (W. S. Maugham, Of Human Bondage)
Did you know?
"Mendacious" and "lying" have very similar meanings, but the two are not interchangeable. "Mendacious" is more formal and literary, suggesting a deception harmless enough to be considered bland. "Lying" is more blunt, accusatory, and often confrontational. You might yell, "You lying rat!" in an argument, but you would most likely stick to the more diplomatic, "Aren't you being somewhat mendacious?" in a business meeting. "Mendacious" can also imply habitual untruthfulness, whereas "lying" is more likely to be used to identify specific incidences of dishonesty.
